First Baby Shots

Today, Nathan received his first set of vaccinations. Brad and I got to experience first hand the lung capacity of our little boy. At 9:30 this morning, he accepted the first shot with a somewhat confused face. He then received the second and that’s when the screaming started. I have never seen him turn so red. The crying lasted about two or three minutes then he was back to his giggly self. The day went well as he took short naps and continued with his usual smiling. Around 9 pm is when he took a turn for the worse. He became warm and began to cry frantically. We were warned that he would most likely run a fever and be in pain. Our German pediatrician advised us to give him a prescribed medication at the onset of a fever. We did just that. Meanwhile… our poor little guy sounded so pitiful. I don’t think I have ever felt so bad. It is torture seeing and hearing your little one in pain and knowing that there is nothing you can do to stop it. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for the medicine to take effect. He is now resting peacefully and, hopefully, on his way to recovery.

Staying Warm on a Cold Christmas Night

Tonight we went out to explore the Christmas Market in Wiesbaden, Germany. So, we wrapped Nathan up in his JJ Cole Original Infant Bundle Me and JJ Cole Shearling Baby Hat. A couple onesies, a hoodie jacket, sweat pants and cozy socks rounded up the clothing. A few hours walking through downtown Wiesbaden and he stayed cozy warm! These cold weather tools are must have for any family in one of the cooler climates. Here’s what we have:

Track and Field Party Ideas

There doesn’t seem to be much out on the web for Track and Field. I tried to search for some party favors to incorporate as inspiration and found nothing. I have come up with a few ideas. I hope they help and forgive me if I am way off “track” on these… (hee hee)

1. Silhouette Arrangements. Using Terra Cotta pots (1 per table), fill each with dirt and a patch of grass (this is your field). Next, adhere strips of high grade sand paper to a white strip of paper (1 per pot) (you can also print off track pictures using Google images or just paint them onto each pot)-this is your track. Attach each track to the outside of each pot. Then, print out pictures of track and field athletes, cut them out, and then trace their outline onto black card stock to make silhouettes. Adhere a thin piece of wire (used for making wreaths) onto each so that they stand in each pot. To complete each silhouette, adhere a picture of each child’s face that is attending the event. Hopefully you can get parents to accommodate you by giving you a pic. If not, the other option would be to print the athletes on white card stock and let each child use colored pencils to draw in themselves. This would give them something to do during any transition time.

2. Gift Boxes. Using small green boxes (found at Michael’s-you could also wrap a cardboard box of any color with green paper or paint them), line each with some tissue paper. Fill with items that track and field athletes would use during meets-bottle of Gatorade, Power Bar, sweatband, you could even put in a gold medal (found through Oriental Trading Company). For the outside of the box, cut strips of high grade sand paper, adhere to a white strip of paper and then attach to the box to form a track for the field (green box). Cluster boxes in center of tables and allow each child to take one home at the end of the party.

3. Running Shoes. That’s right. I am suggesting you use a running shoe for a centerpiece. I am only suggesting it if it is BRAND NEW! For each table, use one shoe and tie a cluster of balloons to it. On each balloon, adhere images of track and field athletes. Using large silhouettes of the athletes would also look pretty cool (in my opinion)-like the ones in example 1. This centerpiece could also be functional. You could fill each shoe with a different type of candy. Have the kids write down a guess of how much candy they think their table’s shoe has in it. Each table winner could take home all the candy in a goody bag. You could also extend this idea by mixing up the items-one table could have the shoe, another could have some batons (could be made using PVC pipe from Home Depot) filled with candy and standing in a party-friendly vase, another could have a Gatorade bottle filled with candy and a sweatband wrapped around it for added “themery”.

I hope I have given you something to go on. I would love to know/see how the party turns out! Please let me know if you (and your party) would like to be featured on Mommyship.

Extend a Prayer

On my way to work this morning, I had to pull off to the side of the road so an ambulance could pass by. As the loud siren and bright lights went racing by, I thought about the person that was being rushed to the hospital. I thought about the pain they could be in and who their family might be. I then said a prayer to God. I first prayed that God would be with that person and protect them. I then prayed that that person would know God and reach out for Him. Do you ever pray for others? It is so easy to pray for our friends and family, but what about absolute strangers? There are many people in your own neighborhood that need God’s blessing. More importantly, there are many more people that need God as their Lord and Savior. I want to encourage you to extend a prayer each day to someone you do not know.

Bag Obsession

Spring is on it’s way and I am thinking about bags. I am completely in love with the bags and accessories offered by Vera Bradley. Aside from the vibrant fabrics and pattern variety, I find that Vera Bradley products are durable and the craftsmanship is of the highest quality. Just by studying any one of the Vera Bradley products, you can feel the sturdiness of the fabric and see that the stitching is impeccable.

The Vera Bradley site has already launched it’s new line (I know because I am on it every day). I LOVE the Frill line! It is so feminine and I appreciate the attention to detail that is characteristic of Vera Bradley products. If you are contemplating a piece from Vera Bradley, I highly recommend starting your collection with one of the smaller pieces. I love the functionality of the Clip Zip ID Wallets. These are especially great for someone who does not like to carry a bag. The wallet allows you to stash your driver’s license in the front window for easy viewing (like when you are asked to show it for that bottle of wine) and hide your other cards/cash in the zippered compartment. I also love that the wallet has a beefy ring to attach my keys for easy carrying.

Another great accessory that is similar to the Clip Zip ID Wallet is the All In One Wristlet. These highly functional and fashionable carriers provide a pocket for your phone/music player, three credit card slots in a zippered compartment, and a clasp strap so it can be attached to a bigger bag. These are perfect for travel or times when you want to go lightweight instead of carrying a bag.

Ever need a splash of color? Check out the Reversible Belt that features a coordinating fabric on each side. The buckle allows the belt to be adjusted by a simple loop, so no need to worry about growing out of it by going up or down a size.
